Lightning bolt

What’s that Crap on your Tailpipe?

I have to admit, I’m not sure at all that I remember the car “grounding straps” from the 1960’s. I wasn’t aware of the current trend either, until recently. I saw a young couple driving a Hemi Charger who were visiting across the street. I had seen the car before, but the red objects hanging off of each exhaust confused me, and I had to resort to Google to settle the conundrum. Static electricity grounds. Hmmm. Didn’t know they were needed, but I did know that parked airplanes used them, and I knew why. But on a car? What does that provide?

Did you know that there are electricity transmission lines that operate at high enough voltages that they don’t have to have provisions for protecting against lightning because their operating voltages are higher than that of lightning?

The Benefits

The Benefits are a little hard to define. Different advertising sources for these products mention saving you from static shock when you exit your vehicle and the bizarre claim of preventing the kids from getting sick! You should know by now that a product doesn’t need to have even a single benefit to sell successfully. When it comes to cars, just looking cool is often enough. This is attested to by a myriad of different products, some of which don’t even bother to offer benefits.

Should You Buy These?

By all means, do what you think best. I won’t be buying these, though. My personal opinion is that they add nothing to the look of a car and provide no substantive benefits. If you have some extra bucks burning a hole in your pocket, feel free to pass some on to me. I can promise you that I will spend it responsibly!

Cool look? Cool is in the eye of the beholder, but No, I think not.
